It is important for anyone who wants to get seriously involved in photography to have the proper computer equipment in order to maximize their ability to store and edit photos. In today’s digital age, a good computer is definitely necessary for all serious photographers.
One of the big arguments between people with regards to buying a computer for digital photo editing is Mac or PC. The fact is that there is no right answer to this question, and each of these options comes with their own advantages and drawbacks.
Buying a Mac can definitely be a good investment for photographers because they are highly reliable and have a lower chance of getting viruses and spyware, though they are not completely immune to these issues.
Mac’s operating system as well as its plug-and-play system appears to work much better than with PCs. A lot of big time professional photographers use Macs for these reasons and more. If you want a good computer to edit the digital photos you take, a Mac is certainly a good investment to make.
One of the drawbacks associated with getting a Mac is that it is quite expensive, and you can easily end up spending upwards of $1200 on a good one. If you are just starting out in the world of photography but are interested in developing your skills, you probably don’t need to drop thousands of dollars on a new computer right away.
At some point, however, you will probably want to consider upgrading your computer if the one you currently have isn’t that good.
You will of course want to consider what your specific needs are when trying to determine what kind of computer to buy for your digital photography. If you are just going to be editing family photos (removing red eye, cropping resizing), just about any computer will do.
If on the other hand you are planning on going beyond just the basic photo editing, it will probably be a good idea to invest in a nice monitor and computer at some point. A Mac Pro tower is a great investment for photographers, as it is extremely reliable and has enough power to provide just about anyone with the ability to do any kind of photo editing work.
There is also the decision of buying a laptop versus a desktop. While you can certainly buy both, not everyone has the money to do so. A laptop computer can be a good investment if you are really into photography and want the ability to edit outside of your home.
It is important that you take the time to look at the specs of each computer you are interested in so that you can find out what they have to offer.
Serious photo editing is going to require a modern computer with some fairly good specs. A 15” aluminum Macbook Pro is considered to be a good photo editing computer, as it comes with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 8 GB of RAM. While this isn’t the latest model by any means, it is somewhat affordable now and perfect for photo editing.
